Two Horse & Three Horse Wine Labels for Missing Gate Vineyard

Packaging

New additions to the Missing Gate range:
Two Horse and Three Horse Wine labels.

I handled the design, branding, and photo retouching on these, and the story behind them played an important role in shaping the visuals.

The names come from an old way of measuring land quality in the Woodham Ferrers region. Back in the 1800s, it was said that the number of horses needed to plough a field indicated how good the soil was. One horse for soft, low-lying ground. Three horses for tougher, richer soil—harder work, but better results.

MG found a real connection between those old land grades and the depth of flavour in the wines. It’s probably down to how the vines respond to stress and the makeup of the soil, which is mostly igneous-based.

The aim with the labels was to reflect that link—between place, history, and what ends up in the bottle.
